About This Spot

Stepping into The Modern feels like crossing into a refined sanctuary nestled in the heart of New York’s bustling art district. The space balances an airy elegance with a warmth that invites quiet conversation and shared moments, making it equally suited for intimate celebrations or thoughtful evenings out. There’s a gentle rhythm here—unhurried yet purposeful—where every detail of the dining room’s design and the flow of service complements the promise of the evening ahead.

The experience unfolds like a carefully composed symphony, where dishes arrive as deliberate notes in a melody that surprises and delights without overwhelming. You might find yourself savoring the delicate tension between sea and earth in a perfectly seared scallop or intrigued by the subtle hum of spices in a tender tartare. Each plate speaks softly of craftsmanship, layering flavors and textures with a humility that encourages you to slow down and savor the journey.

Beyond the food, The Modern’s atmosphere carries a thoughtful ease. The staff’s attentiveness is genuine without being rehearsed, creating a sense of being quietly cared for rather than watched. It’s a space where knowledge meets curiosity—where servers gladly share the stories behind a wine pairing or ingredient choice, adding layers to the evening’s unfolding narrative.

Whether you arrive to mark a special occasion, delight in culinary ingenuity, or simply to share time with loved ones amid a setting that balances poise and approachability, The Modern offers a place to linger and connect. It’s a reminder that the most memorable experiences often come from moments that feel both considered and lived in, like coming home to something familiar yet new with every visit.

First visit to The Modern, and it was an exceptional experience. The food was refined and beautifully executed, the service was attentive and polished, and the atmosphere was perfect for a honeymoon—elegant yet warm, sophisticated without being stiff. A special thank you to Chef Yoshua, who hosted us so graciously and made the evening truly memorable. The kitchen tour was a fantastic touch—eye-opening, inspiring, and honestly… wow. Thoughtful hospitality, excellent cuisine, and a team that clearly takes pride in what they do. A honeymoon dinner done right. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Took the train up to celebrate a day & night out for a birthday of a friend who loves good food. Hands down the best tasting menu I've had in 3-4 years. Every course was beautifully composed and nuanced, with unexpected surprises tucked into each dish that delighted the curious mind. As a biochemist, I was particularly pleased by the excitement and willingness of the knowledgeable staff to explain how specific textures and tastes were constructed from a clever mix of simple and complex ingredients. The kampache hit the spot, as did the pumpkin decoction accompanying it with little sesame crunches. The Modern Martini was a masterful blend by a clearly talented bartender. We were seated by the garden and the noise level was perfect - we could chat & catch up over nearly 3 hrs with lots of laughter. A hand written thank you note to the Chef earned us a surprise visit to the Kitchen, which capped off a perfect day in the city. Thanks to the staff for an excellent time. We will definitely be back!

We had a memorable experience at The Modern. The food, atmosphere and service were top excellent. Our server Allegra was knowledgeable, fun and on point all evening. The room is airy, modern and beautiful. The food is delicious and beautifully presented. The eggs on eggs on eggs was the highlight. Full of flavour with a unique and pleasing presentation. We enjoyed the 7 course meal with wine pairings. It’s the way to go as adding the eggs on eggs dish is an extra $75 anyway and you have to try it. If you’re in NYC and have a healthy budget The Modern is an excellent option. It definitely stands up to its 2 star Michelin status.

I had an incredible experience at The Modern! My favorite dish was eggs on eggs on eggs, but every course was good. Service was friendly, attentive, and accommodating. I paid $354 in total with tax and tip for the abstractions menu with no drinks besides water. I ate at Per Se in March, and I'd probably recommend The Modern over Per Se. Both were great, but The Modern is cheaper and an easier reservation to get.

My husband and I held a private event at The Modern with our family and friends (about 40 guests) and I must say it was a huge success! I cannot thank enough the event manager Lisa Yuk for being so patient and helpful with my endless list of questions and coordinating everything to make the event possible as well as the event maître d’ Joshua for keeping me calm and organized on the day of the event! All our guests were complimenting us on not only how delicious every dish was (our favorites were canapés and “Baby Lettuce and Sorrel Salad with Peekytoe Crab” and “Angus Beef Tenderloin with Maitake Mushrooms and Black Truffle Pommes Puree” and the celebration cake ) along with the drinks but the excellent service and how beautiful The Modern is with a stunning view of the MoMA’s Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Sculpture Garden. The Modern absolutely deserves the 2 Michelin stars!! (Maybe even 3 stars? ) Thank you so much for making our special event so memorable and unique. Also I felt that the prices were very reasonable. And lastly giving takeaways (we chose bon bons) were a great way to thank our guests and end the event. If anyone is thinking of a special place to hold a private event in NYC, I highly recommend The Modern without hesitation!

MoMA is my favorite NYC institution, and I've been dying to check out The Modern ever since I learned of its existence, but would you believe that no one ever wants to spend $200+ to experience it with me? Pffft. Plebs. Well, I finally got my wish when relatives came to visit. We opted for the Impressions menu as it had more of what we wanted. - Smoked sturgeon and cucumber tart: Perfectly baked, and as savory and refreshing as one would expect for this kind of opener. - Avocado and summer squash with cara cara orange and basil: Beautifully plated and as refreshing as, well, a summer salad. The cara caras were a nice touch. - Sunflower sourdough with cultured butter + Turbot cooked on the bone with sweet corn and lovage: These came together, presumably so one had something to sop up the lovely turbot sauce with. The sourdough was crisp and chewy, and the fish was perfectly tender with lots of maize flavor. Lovely. - Roasted maine lobster with maitakes and meyer lemons vs. Venison glazed in cognac with sweet prince tomatoes and jamon iberico: Half of our party opted for the lobster, while the other half got venison, allowing us to try both. I was Team Lobster and definitely made the right choice, from the juicy, crunchy crustacean itself to the equally juicy, crunchy shrooms. Mmmm. The venison will undoubtedly appease manly red meat lovers, but I'm so over the "seared meat course" on every tasting menu. - Milk chocolate ganache with mint and shiso ice cream: A simple but satisfying dessert with surprisingly not too sweet ganache. The real star was the ice-cream though, because I've rarely found shiso ice-cream anywhere (even in Japan), and considering it's one of my favorite herbs....Let's just say I *MIGHT* have licked my plate. Might. We also received a complimentary white chocolate and lemon mini-cake for celebrating a special occasion. It was delectably spongey and large enough for the whole table to share. The final petit fours were a nice touch as well: an mandarin chocolate truffle and guava-jasmine gelatin. For drinky drinks, we got the fruity Jungle Bird and zesty Spiced Pina, but their cocktail and wine list will likely impress even the pickiest drinkers, given this is a two Michelin-starred restaurant. Service was as attentive as one would also expect for such a starred restaurant, but not so overly obsequious that I felt like I'd been recently knighted. I actually felt the decor was a bit lacking for a modern art museum restaurant--they could use a few unique statues and paintings a la Robert above the Museum of Arts and Design. And the sculpture park wasn't lit up when we were there, so that was boring to behold too. All in all, glad I (finally) tried this. For the most part, it lived up to the fantasies.

The service was great. Upscale atmosphere with the New York pace. I really enjoyed the mini crab appetizer, it gave you the punch of the ocean. I love how the chef made the light cream full of strong scent, of orange and bonito without any curdling. Seafood is so delightful and fresh, you can taste the sweetness of the fish. The mini pumpkin dumplings are so creamy and tasty with the fried spinach leaf, the sweet lobster with the super thin slices of lemon was delicious. The duck special is on the chef(thank you!) and its skin is so crispy the melt in your mouth meat! Five course menu is enough for me; it will be too much! Highly recommended you to go and find out your own! Or finding little excuses to celebrate there! It’s a lovely restaurant to dine in with or without a company (prefer to share with other friends and family though)! P.s. I also saw an older lady with her family there, it remind me of my family growing up going out with grandparents every week to have a family meal together.
